Two of the UK’s supermarket giants Asda and Tesco have both ordered food product recalls from their nationwide stores over health and safety fears.
Tesco has recalled it’s free from Belgian Chocolate wafers due to concerns that the product could have been contaminated with salmonella.
Asda has followed suit with similar concerns over its Asda Good and Balanced Dates line as the product has as one of its ingredients Sulphur Dioxide, however this is not identified on the product packaging.
The Chocolate Wafers by Tesco have been withdrawn following the confirmation that another product also made in the same contracted Tesco’s factory tested positive for traces of the stomach virus.
Tesco and Asda food product recall for Salmonella
In response to these positive tests, the Food Standards Agency issued the food product recall after concerns were raised about products already being offered for sale in stores.
Tesco has confirmed though that the move is just a precaution.
A Tesco spokesperson said, “We have recalled our Tesco Free From Belgian Chocolate wafer product following the potential for contamination identified at the factory which manufactures the food product.”
They went on further to state that whilst there is no evidence to suggest contamination at this time the food product recall has been initiated purely as a precautionary measure.
With regards to the Asda line of Good and Balanced dates, the Food Standards Agency has said that this specifically relates to those with a high sensitivity to Sulphites and Sulphur Dioxide like that found in Cider.
The FSA advice on this is that anyone who has purchased the 250gram packaging with this sensitivity to Sulphur Dioxide should not consume it.
Customers have instead been asked to return the product in its packaging to the store it was sold for a full refund.
